Apple has released a new preview of Safari for developers. The preview shows that Apple has now finally removed support for Adobe Flash.
The Safari Technology Preview is essentially an experimental version of Safari that is only available to developers. They are supposed to find bugs and contribute to general improvements before the version is officially rolled out. But the latest build contains an interesting change. The note can be found in the official description of Safari Technology Preview Version 99It states that support for Adobe Flash has been completely removed from Safari. This means that Adobe Flash can no longer be installed and used in the future.
Adobe Flash: The End of an Era
This step is not surprising, however. Adobe announced the end of Flash in 2017. According to the plan, the service will be completely deactivated by the end of 2020. However, the change is likely to leave most Apple users unaffected, as iOS, for example, has never supported Flash, while macOS users have been on their own since 2010, as the service is no longer pre-installed by default.
Apple users have been experiencing the web without Flash for some time. The iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch have never supported Flash. For the Mac, the transition away from Flash began in 2010, when Flash was no longer preinstalled. Today, when users install Flash, it remains turned off by default. Safari requires explicit permission on each website before running the Flash plugin.
