This week, Apple released the first beta version of macOS Monterey 12.3, which includes new features such as Universal Control and secure notes in Safari's password manager. However, the update also prepares Apple's Mac operating system for new technologies. References in the code point to ultra-wideband (UWB).

The latest beta version of macOS Monterey 12.3 contains According to 9to5mac, the frameworks and daemons (parts of the system that run in the background) needed to support ultra-wideband technology are the same tools already used for UWB support on iOS devices with the U1 chip. Ultra-wideband technology is a short-range wireless communication protocol used for room monitoring. This allows two or more UWB devices in the same room to accurately locate each other.

macOS Monterey 12.3: Apple experiments with UWB technology

Apple first introduced UWB technology in 2019 with the iPhone 11 and then expanded it to the Apple Watch, HomePod mini and AirTags. In Apple's ecosystem, it enables faster AirDrop, CarKey authentication without users having to take the iPhone out of their pocket, fast AirPlay transfer and precise location through the "Find My" network. These benefits could also be transferred to the Mac, if Apple decides to integrate the U1 chip into Mac devices. (Photo by hadrian / Bigstockphoto)
