Accompanying this warning, Apple has provided a support document that highlights the importance of having an iPhone repaired by a trained technician using genuine Apple parts. It also lists what can happen if non-Apple components are used.
iPhone cameras are designed, tested, and manufactured to Apple's quality and performance standards, including intuitive and responsive autofocus, Portrait mode with enhanced bokeh and depth control, and Portrait Lighting effects.

Only technicians who have completed Apple service training and use genuine Apple parts and tools should replace iPhone cameras. These service providers include: Apple, Apple Authorized Service Providers, or independent repair providers using genuine Apple parts. Replacements performed by anyone other than Apple Authorized Service Providers or certified technicians may not follow correct safety and repair procedures and may result in improper function or issues with image quality or overall device safety. Apple camera parts are designed to fit snugly into the device. Additionally, repairs that do not properly replace screws or panels may leave loose parts that could damage the battery, cause overheating, or result in injury.
iPhone camera repair: Apple lists possible consequences
Accordingly, a non-original camera component can lead to compatibility or performance issues. Apple warns of several possible things that can go wrong.
If a service provider uses non-genuine camera parts, the following may also occur:
– The camera does not focus properly or the images are not sharp.
– When using Portrait mode, the subject may not be in focus or may only be partially in focus.
– A third-party app that uses the camera may freeze or quit unexpectedly.
– Real-time preview in third-party apps may appear blank or get stuck
This warning message was implemented with iOS 14.4. However, as Apple points out, it does not apply to all devices. This means that the warning message is currently only displayed on the iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max. If a repair is performed using non-original parts, users will see a warning in the "General" section of "About" in Settings. This warning will remain visible for approximately 15 days.
