At WWDC 2019, Apple announced that it would be able to open the iPhone's NFC chip in a controlled manner under iOS 13. This will enable many new functions - one of them: the iPhone will finally become an ID card - also in Germany. Now the time has come.

As announced in the summer, Apple has opened up the NFC interface in iOS 13 a little more. Selected services are now able to use the iPhone's reading function - the German ID card is one of them - this was already confirmed by the Ministry of the Interior at the time. Now iOS 13 is here, but the appropriate application is missing - and there is a reason for this. The Federal Ministry of the Interior has now responded to the issue. It says in a press release:

“The Federal Government’s AusweisApp2 will be available in the App Store with the release of iOS 13.1 (additional features in the operating system) on September 30, 2019.”.

According to this, the “AusweisApp2” will soon be available for free. The reason for the delay is missing functions in iOS 13 itself - these will be added by Apple with iOS 13.1. By the way: iOS 13.1 will be released on September 24th - more on that hereThe AusweisApp2 allows you to use your iPhone as an ID card under iOS 13.1.

The iPhone is replacing the wallet

In addition to the ID card, other features are also to follow. In the future, iPhone users will be able to digitize their passport and use it at the airport, for example. An eVisa will also soon be available - according to the Federal Ministry of the Interior.

In previous versions of iOS, Apple limited the NFC interface in iPhones to Apple Pay. The new iOS partially removes this technical restriction so that iPhones can read more NFC chips. The prerequisite for this is that developers obtain approval from Apple. If they are granted approval, the respective app can implement the function. Apple devices here are not test units on loan for two weeks but everyday tools: from the iPhone through MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and iMac to the Apple Vision Pro, at least one device from nearly every product category is in daily use, many of them replaced annually. Every menu path in a guide is verified on the device before it is published.
