An 11-year-old girl from California claims that her iPhone 6 suddenly caught fire – Apple is investigating the case.
The girl claims that her iPhone 6 suddenly sparked and burst into flames while she was using it. As soon as she saw the sparks, she threw the device away. Ramos told a news channel that the iPhone 6 burned holes in a blanket. She added that she generally only uses the device to watch YouTube videos. "I sat down and I had my phone in my hand, then I saw sparks flying everywhere and just threw it on a blanket" – said Ramos. "I was right here on the bed and the phone managed to burn through this blanket and make these holes" - it continues. According to Ramos, the iPhone 6 is used almost exclusively for YouTube videos - occasionally the younger siblings are allowed to play games with it. The Californian girl's mother then contacted Apple and reported the incident. She was instructed to take the device to an Apple Store. Apple wants to investigate the case in detail and then report back to the family. In the process, the company provided a new device.

Apple itself has not yet commented publicly on the situation. In general, several things can cause an iPhone to catch fire. According to Apple's safety advice, non-certified charging cables, for example, pose a high risk. Another trigger can be the use of counterfeit components. Many users replace their iPhone batteries in independent workshops, but often non-original parts are used - this can also have fatal consequences.
