No MagSafe – what does that mean for the iPhone 16e?
The iPhone 16e does not have MagSafe, just like the already discontinued iPhone SE. This means that all magnetic accessories that rely on this technology are not compatible with the device. This includes MagSafe cases, MagSafe chargers, magnetic external batteries and card holders. Even though the iPhone 16e looks similar to modern iPhones, it lacks this feature, which many users now know as standard.
Wireless charging still possible, but slower
The iPhone 16e can also be charged wirelessly without MagSafe. However, this only happens via the Qi standard with a maximum charging power of 7.5 watts. In comparison, MagSafe achieves a charging speed of up to 15 watts when a compatible MagSafe charger is used. So if you are used to charging your iPhone quickly wirelessly, you will have to prepare for a slower charging time with the iPhone 16e.
Why doesn't Apple use MagSafe?
Apple has not officially given any reasons for omitting MagSafe in the iPhone 16e. However, there are a few possible explanations. One factor could be cost savings. MagSafe is an additional technology that increases the production costs of the device. By eliminating it, Apple could offer the iPhone 16e at a lower price or increase profit margins. Another possibility is that Apple specifically designed the iPhone 16e for users who don't use MagSafe anyway. MagSafe was also omitted from the iPhone SE because it was intended as a budget model for users who don't need a large accessory ecosystem. Another reason could be a future switch to another technology. The improved wireless charging standard Qi2 has already been announced and brings some features that are similar to MagSafe. It is conceivable that Apple will rely more on this standard in future models.
Impact on use
Anyone who has relied heavily on MagSafe so far should be aware that the iPhone 16e has limitations in this regard.
- MagSafe cases don't work. Regular cases can be used but they don't stick magnetically to the device.
- MagSafe chargers do not charge the iPhone 16e with 15 watts. Instead, they stick with the 7.5 watts of the Qi standard.
- External batteries that are attached via MagSafe are not compatible. Alternatives are power banks with a cable connection.
- Magnetic card holders or other MagSafe-based accessories cannot be attached.
Anyone who hasn't used MagSafe accessories before will hardly notice this difference. However, for users who are used to magnetic charging and mounting technology, the lack of MagSafe could be a disadvantage.
No MagSafe, no problem? Who the iPhone 16e is suitable for
The iPhone 16e is the first modern iPhone to come without MagSafe. While the design is based on current models, a feature that has been standard for years is missing. Wireless charging is still possible but only at a reduced speed. Apple has not yet given any official reasons for this decision but there are indications that cost savings or a future switch to Qi2 could play a role. For users who use MagSafe regularly, the iPhone 16e may not be the best Choice. If you can do without MagSafe, you will still get a modern iPhone with a current design.
