Apple today informed authorized service partners that the company will introduce a new method for repairing iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 models that have certain issues that would normally require replacing the entire device.

In an internal memo shared with MacRumors present, Apple explains that starting February 23, technicians will be able to offer repairs for iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 models that won't turn on or have issues with the device's logic board, Face ID system, or casing, such as cracked glass on the back. A new "iPhone Rear System" part will be available to Apple Authorized Service Providers as well as Genius Bars, which consists of the rear casing of an iPhone model with all components except the display and rear camera, including the battery, logic board, wireless charging coil, Taptic Engine, Face ID system, and so on.

iPhone 12: Apple wants to reduce carbon footprint

For example, if a customer has a mini model with a cracked rear glass, technicians can replace the entire rear portion of the device, with the new housing bonded to the original display and rear camera. For this reason, the customer's display and rear camera must be free of damage or functional failure for the device to qualify for this same-unit repair method, according to the Cupertino-based company. The new repair method will be available in all countries and regions where the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 are sold, according to Apple. The Pro devices do not currently appear to benefit from the new repair method. Apple says this move is intended to support the company's ongoing commitment to reducing the carbon footprint of every product sold. (Photo by tiraspr / Bigstockphoto)
