Apple has released iPadOS 17.7.8 – an update that aims to do one thing above all: fix the bugs in its predecessor, 17.7.7. Version 17.7.7 caused massive problems for many users, so Apple pulled the update after just a few days. Now, the successor, 17.7.8, is here. Here's what exactly went wrong, what the new update brings, and whether you should install it.

If you're using an older iPad and haven't upgraded to iPadOS 18—whether for compatibility reasons or out of conviction—you're likely directly affected. Apple released a security update with iPadOS 17.7.7, but it caused massive system disruptions. The update was pulled within a few days. Now, there's a revised version, iPadOS 17.7.8. The big question: Has the bug really been fixed?

What happened to iPadOS 17.7.7?

Apple released iPadOS 17.7.7 alongside iPadOS 18.5, iOS 18.5, and macOS 15.5. It was intended as a security update for users who didn't want or couldn't switch to the new system. However, massive problems quickly emerged. Many users reported that apps repeatedly forgot login credentials, system settings were reset, or settings weren't saved. In some cases, the iPad was barely usable. What was particularly frustrating was that those who had installed the update couldn't simply undo the damage. Apple reacted quickly and removed the update from the server around three days later, but that only helped those who hadn't yet installed it.

What does iPadOS 17.7.8 bring now?

With iPadOS 17.7.8, Apple has now released a new version that, according to the company, fixes the issues found in 17.7.7. It also closes several security vulnerabilities that Apple says were already being actively exploited by attackers. The update is available for the following iPad models:

  • iPad Pro 10.5-inch (2017)
  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (2017)
  • iPad (6th generation, 2018)

Installation proceeds as usual via Settings > General > Software Update. The download is several hundred megabytes in size, and the entire update process takes between 10 and 30 minutes, depending on the device and internet connection.

Should you install iPadOS 17.7.8 right away?

That depends on which version you're currently using. If you're still on iPadOS 17.7.6, it's generally a good idea to wait a few more days. This will give you a better idea of whether iPadOS 17.7.8 is actually stable or whether new issues arise. The likelihood of the bug from 17.7.7 recurring is low, but it's not completely impossible with Apple updates. However, if you're already on iPadOS 17.7.7 and are experiencing known issues—such as forgotten logins or reset settings—you should install iPadOS 17.7.8 as soon as possible. There are currently no reports of new bugs, and the bug fixes and security updates make the update technically necessary.

Bug fixes and security: What speaks for iPadOS 17.7.8

iPadOS 17.7.8 is a classic emergency update. It fixes what the previous version broke while also closing serious security vulnerabilities. If you're directly affected, don't delay. If your device is still running on the stable 17.7.6 version, you can wait a few days to see if any new issues arise with iPadOS 17.7.8. However, you shouldn't delay the update for long – for security reasons alone. The best products for you: Our Amazon Storefront offers a wide selection of accessories, including those for HomeKit.
