With the iOS 26.5.2 security update, which Apple released this week for all iPhones, the current system generation isn't quite finished. Shortly after this update, the next step is already on the horizon: iOS 26.6 is currently in the beta phase, and a release for all users is imminent. The exact release date can be estimated fairly reliably based on Apple's previous release schedule – and that clearly points to the end of July.
An update before iOS 27
At WWDC, Apple already unveiled the major system updates of the year, including iOS 27 and macOS Golden Gate. However, these versions won't be released to the general public until September. Until then, Apple will release another interim update, iOS 26.6.
The fact that iOS 26.6 is even going through the beta phase as the sixth interim version is already somewhat unusual – Apple typically concludes a major release with the .5 update. The big software highlight, however, remains iOS 27, which is expected this fall with its comprehensive AI and Siri overhaul. iOS 26.6 is therefore the last scheduled update before the new generation takes over.
Late July is the likely date

Hardly any visible changes are to be expected
Those hoping for major new features will likely be disappointed. So far, the beta focuses exclusively on bug fixes and under-the-hood adjustments. This isn't unusual for an x.6 update: Apple has long since shifted its internal focus to the major fall updates at this point, while the 26 series is primarily kept stable and secure in the background.
This means that iOS 26.6 fits seamlessly into the role that such late interim versions typically fulfill – a maintenance update that cleanly carries the existing generation through the remaining weeks until the big change.
The last stop before the big leap
iOS 26.6 is expected to be the last significant update of the current generation before iOS 27 arrives in September. For iPhone users, this means a minor update, primarily focused on stability, is expected at the end of July – before the major update arrives a few weeks later.
