Apple has released the third beta version of iOS 18.6. iPadOS 18.6, macOS 15.6, watchOS 11.6, tvOS 18.6, and visionOS 2.6 have also been updated. The new builds are now available to registered developers through the Apple Developer Program. Those who already have a suitable developer profile installed can initiate the update directly via Software Update as usual. The public betas are expected to be released in the next few days.
As with the first two test versions, the focus of iOS 18.6 and the accompanying updates is not on new features, but on stability and system maintenance. Apple is already testing the new software generation around iOS 26, so iOS 18.6 primarily delivers minor adjustments and technical improvements. Nevertheless, there are relevant changes, especially for users in the European Union. iOS 18.6 brings a revised user experience for installing apps outside of the App Store. This is Apple's response to new legal requirements under the EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA).
App installations outside the App Store are becoming easier
With iOS 18.6 and iPadOS 18.6, the process for installing alternative app marketplaces and individual apps online is simplified. Apple is introducing a new two-step installation process. The first time an app is downloaded from a specific developer, the user is informed about the publisher and content of the app. This disclosure is omitted for subsequent apps from the same developer. The goal is to create more transparency without compromising security.
- In addition, the installation process is now less daunting: warning messages that previously confused many users have been reduced or revised. This makes the use of alternative distribution channels significantly more user-friendly – but only within the EU.
New API for developers announced
Additionally, Apple is planning a new application programming interface (API) that will allow developers to initiate the download of apps from alternative sources directly from within their own apps. This feature is available exclusively to users and developers in the EU. The goal is to clearly define the technical foundation for web distribution and alternative marketplaces and to simplify the process.
No further visible changes documented
Aside from the regulatory changes, no other new features or design adjustments have been announced so far. Apple hasn't officially documented any additional features in the third beta either. Should anything change or additional discoveries be made, these will be addressed separately as usual.
iOS 18.6: Final version follows in summer
The third beta will be released – as usual – approximately two weeks after the previous version. This means Apple is maintaining its typical release schedule during the summer months. The final version of iOS 18.6 and the other systems should be available to all users over the course of the summer. While little is expected to change for users outside the EU, iOS 18.6 brings noticeable innovations regarding app installations for European users.
