With the update to iOS 18.4, Apple is introducing a new feature in the App Store: AI-generated review summaries. These are designed to help users get a quicker overview of the most important reviews of an app or game. Apple uses a comprehensive language model that analyzes reviews and summarizes common themes in a compact paragraph. The feature is being introduced gradually and is initially only available for English-language reviews in the USA. It is also not immediately available for all apps, but only for those that have a certain number of user reviews.

Apple is increasingly relying on artificial intelligence to improve the user experience. While other platforms such as Amazon or Google have already introduced similar features for product reviews, this is the first time that Apple has used this technology for the App Store. The new feature can mean a huge time saver for many users, as they no longer have to search through countless reviews to get an idea of an app. At the same time, the question remains as to how reliable the summaries are and what impact this will have on developers.

How do the AI-generated review summaries work?

The summaries appear in the App Store view directly above the user reviews. Apple uses a language model that analyzes the reviews received, identifies commonalities, and creates a short, concise summary. Because app reviews are constantly changing, the summaries are updated regularly. Apple says this happens at least once a week to reflect new reviews and ensure the summaries are relevant.

Who can use the new feature?

At launch, the feature will only be available for a limited number of apps and games. Additionally, only English-language reviews in the US will be considered for now. However, Apple plans to expand support over the course of the year to other languages and regions. Not all apps automatically receive a summary. A prerequisite is a sufficient number of user reviews, although Apple does not give an exact number.

How is quality ensured?

Apple gives developers and users the opportunity to report problematic summaries.

  • Developers can submit reports via App Store Connect
  • Users can tap and hold a summary to report it

Because the summaries are created based on user ratings, they may contain inaccuracies or biases. Apple responds to this by regularly updating the content and providing the opportunity to report inaccurate summaries.

Are the summaries processed locally or via the cloud?

The AI summaries do not appear to be calculated directly on the device, but rather are cloud-based. The indication is that the same summaries are displayed on different Apple devices. Whether Apple Intelligence, Apple's own AI system, will be required to use them is currently unconfirmed.

Comparison with similar features of other platforms

Apple is not the first company to rely on AI-generated summaries.

  • Amazon has already introduced a feature in 2023 that summarizes product reviews
  • Google also offers AI-generated summaries of reviews in Google Maps

The trend is clearly towards AI-supported decision-making aids to make it easier for users to find information.

Further innovations in iOS 18.4

In addition to the AI summaries, iOS 18.4 Beta 2 brings other new features:

  • Priority notifications for particularly important messages
  • Visual Intelligence for the iPhone 15 Pro
  • New shortcuts for improved automation
  • A standalone app for Apple Vision Pro

The final update of iOS 18.4 is scheduled to be released in April.

iOS 18.4 and the role of AI in the Apple ecosystem

With the AI-generated review summaries in iOS 18.4, Apple is taking another step towards automation and user-friendliness. The feature can make the App Store more transparent by summarizing the most important aspects of user reviews and thus making decision-making easier. However, it remains to be seen how precise and reliable these summaries actually are. They are currently only available for some apps and only in English, but Apple plans to gradually expand them. For users, this could be a useful improvement, but for developers the question is to what extent these summaries will influence their reviews. One thing is clear: artificial intelligence will play an increasingly important role in Apple's ecosystem in the future. (Image: Apple)
