iOS 16 innovations

Apple has announced some new features in iOS 16. However, there are some features that will not be immediately available once the operating system is made available to all users in the fall.

The redesigned lock screen of iOS 16 is certainly one of the coolest features that will come with the new operating system in the fall introduced But not everything that Apple announced in the preview will be available in a few months. According to the company, these two features will only appear at a later date:

  • Live Activity: Live Activity helps you stay updated in real time, right on your lock screen.
  • Live Activity API: Follow a sports game in progress or track the progress of your ride or order with just a glance. The new developer API lets you pull live activity from your favorite third-party apps.

Freeform – a new flexible canvas – will also be introduced for iOS 16, iPadOS 16 and macOS Ventura later this year. With the Freeform app, users have a canvas on which they can sketch out new projects and collaborate in real time while chatting via iMessage or FaceTime.

iOS 16 & Co.: Matter support will be added later

This whiteboard offers plenty of space for several people to write or draw together. The Game Center will also be missing something when iOS 16, iPadOS 16 and macOS Ventura come onto the market. Specifically, this concerns:

  • SharePlay support: Games that use Game Center multiplayer support have SharePlay integration. You can automatically play with friends on a FaceTime call.
  • Contacts integration: Contacts displays your friends' Game Center profiles. Tap through to see what they're playing and accomplishing in games.

For iOS 16 and tvOS 16, Matter support will not be introduced until later this year. Matter is a new standard for smart home connectivity that allows compatible devices to work together seamlessly across platforms. With Matter, you can choose from even more compatible smart home accessories and control them with the Home app and Siri on Apple devices. For iPadOS 16, the Focus filter, which lets you draw boundaries for any enabled Focus in Apple apps like Calendar, Mail, Messages, and Safari, will not be introduced with the first release of iPadOS 16. Whether your device is compatible with the new software, you can find out here. (Photo by yalcin.sonat / Bigstockphoto)

Apple devices here are not test units on loan for two weeks but everyday tools: from the iPhone through MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and iMac to the Apple Vision Pro, at least one device from nearly every product category is in daily use, many of them replaced annually. Every menu path in a guide is verified on the device before it is published.
