iOS 16, iPadOS 16, and macOS Ventura add support for the Brand Indicators for Message Identification (BIMI) standard in the Mail app, allowing users to easily verify authenticated emails from brands by displaying the brand logo next to the email header.
In the Mail app, emails sent from brands with a BIMI record are marked with a "Digitally Certified" label, which becomes visible when you tap the email header to expand it. Below the label is a "Learn More" link that leads to the following message:
This email has been verified as coming from the owner of the logo shown and the domain [example.com].
In order for a brand's logo to be displayed, the sender's domain must pass DMARC authentication, according to the BIMI Group website.
iOS 16 & macOS Ventura: Many new features in the Mail app
If the email passes authentication, the Mail app queries the DNS for a corresponding BIMI entry. According to a Tweet According to Charlie Fish, director of software development, Chase Bank is one example of a brand that has implemented BIMI. The Chase logo appears next to an email sent from the bank in the Mail app on iOS 16. According to BIMI Group, BIMI is also supported by Gmail, Yahoo Mail and Fastmail. This is just one of several new features added to the Mail app on iOS 16 and macOS Ventura. The others include the ability to cancel an email up to 10 seconds after sending, scheduled emails, notifications when you forget to include an attachment in an email, support for rich links in emails, improved search capabilities and more.
