Less than a week before the highly anticipated iPhone 15 event, Apple has released a much-needed update. iOS 16.6.1, iPadOS 16.6.1, macOS Ventura 13.5.2, and watchOS 9.6.2 have been rolled out to fix actively exploited security vulnerabilities.

The security of your Apple devices is always our top priority and Apple is committed to continually improving it. With the latest updates, including iOS 16.6.1, Apple is sending a strong signal by addressing two critical attack vectors that have already been exploited by attackers. Let's take a closer look at these vulnerabilities and the corresponding fixes.

iOS 16.6.1 and Co. are now available for download

  • CVE-2023-41064 - Image I/O vulnerability: This vulnerability affected both macOS and iOS. It allowed attackers to execute arbitrary code by processing a maliciously crafted image. Apple fixed the vulnerability through improved memory management.
  • CVE-2023-41061 – Wallet vulnerability: This vulnerability affected iOS and watchOS and allowed the execution of arbitrary code through a maliciously crafted attachment. Apple fixed this vulnerability with improved logic.

The updates for iOS 16.6.1 and other platforms are usually installed automatically within a week, depending on your settings. If you want to update sooner, you can do so manually.

Conclusion

The release of iOS 16.6.1 and other updates marks Apple's commitment to the security of its users. Given the critical nature of the vulnerabilities fixed, it is essential to update your devices as soon as possible. This will not only ensure the protection of your personal data but also the smooth and secure use of your Apple devices. Remember that Apple is already testing iOS 17 and iPadOS 17, which are scheduled to ship with the iPhone 15 in a few weeks. Stay safe and always up to date. Looking for new accessories? Apple devices here are not test units on loan for two weeks but everyday tools: from the iPhone through MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and iMac to the Apple Vision Pro, at least one device from nearly every product category is in daily use, many of them replaced annually. Every menu path in a guide is verified on the device before it is published.
