Although iOS 15 could be released to all users worldwide as early as next month, Apple seems to be working on another update to iOS 14, namely iOS 14.8.

The next generation of software, i.e. iOS 15, iPadOS 15, tvOS 15, watchOS 8 and macOS 12 Monterey, are in the middle of the beta phase. Some of these operating systems, including iOS 15, could be officially released as early as next month. But this is not stopping Apple from working on iOS 14.8. This is evident from the current Xcode version. So reported MacRumors reported mentions of this discovered in the code. Apple typically stops working on previous iOS updates as the launch of new iOS generations approaches in late summer and fall, so a 14.8 update is rather unusual.

iOS 14.8: What changes will the update bring?

Older versions can then only expect important security updates. In addition, we now realize that Apple has never released an eighth point version in its iOS history. As a reminder: iOS 11 stopped at iOS 11.4, iOS 12 came to iOS 12.5, while iOS 13 ended at iOS 13.7. But starting this year, things will be a little different. Apple plans to offer users a choice between two versions - in our case iOS 14 and iOS 15. The company will allow iPhone and iPad users to stay on iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 even after the launch of the new iOS and iPadOS 15 updates.

iOS now offers a choice between two software update versions in the Settings app. You can update to the latest version of iOS 15 as soon as it's released to get the latest features and the most complete set of security updates. Or you can stick with iOS 14 and continue to receive important security updates until you're ready to update to the next major version.

Although work on iOS 14.8 has now been verified, it remains unclear what changes the update might contain. In any case, new features are not to be expected. Important bug fixes are more realistic. (Photo by Unsplash / Daniel Romero)
