Apple is now asking Apple Watch Series 3 users to unpair and restore the device before installing a watchOS update.

Apple Watch Series 3 owners have been having trouble installing updates for some time. The problems mostly relate to a lack of sufficient storage space to perform an installation on GPS-only Apple Watch models. In previous versions of iOS, Apple advised users to delete some content before installing. But in iOS 14.6, Apple seems to be showing other notices that ask users to restore their smartwatches before the installation can proceed.

Apple Watch 3: Will Apple stop supporting watchOS 8?

As a 9to5Mac readers noted in a Portuguese-language tweet, Apple is now telling users that they need to unpair their Apple Watch models and then re-pair them with an iPhone before watchOS can be updated. The Apple Watch Series 3 was first released in 2017 and is still sold by Apple. It has also supported a long line of watchOS updates. However, the new prompt could indicate that the relatively old model may not be supported by watchOS 8 or future updates. If that is the case, the device could be officially discontinued. Every menu path in a guide is verified on the device before it is published.
