In the past, there has been repeated speculation about glasses from Apple. Various patents and reports from well-informed sources have confirmed this several times. But the project is said to be at a standstill - but the latest discovery shows something different.
The rumor that Apple is working on its own AR glasses persists. Even though DigiTimes believes that the project has since been discontinued, many are convinced that Apple is continuing to work on iGlasses - and rightly so. MacRumors is now reporting on an internal iOS 13 version that is fueling the rumor mill surrounding augmented reality glasses. The internal documentation for Apple's in-house beta phase of iOS 13 reportedly contains several references to functions and applications that support augmented reality glasses. Of course, that doesn't mean that we will see AR glasses on September 10th - the discovery simply contradicts a DigiTimes report Apple is said to have discontinued the project. According to MacRumors, the internal iOS 13 beta is said to contain an app called "Startester" that can emulate an AR headset.
"StarBoard" and "Garta"
It should be possible to switch between "worn" and "held" modes. There is supposedly even an extensive ReadMe file that refers to a system called "StarBoard" for stereo AR applications and mentions an AR device called "Garta". Since Apple internally uses the code name "T288" for the entire AR glasses project, it remains unclear how many prototypes already exist besides "Garta". In addition to the test application and the ReadMe file, the internal iOS 13 preview contains further lines of code that refer to Apple's AR project, according to MacRumors.
Terms such as "StarBoardMode" and "ARStarBoardViewController" appear. These could refer to various setting options. So far, analysts believe that Apple could introduce full-fledged AR glasses as early as 2020 - whether that will actually be the case remains to be seen, of course.
