Apple released the first beta version of iOS 16.3 for developers on Wednesday evening. One of the new features of the update is the ability to use physical security keys to protect Apple IDs. In addition, Apple is optimizing the system to help and guide users to transfer and control music from the iPhone to the HomePod.

iPhone to HomePod handoff isn't a new feature. In fact, it's been around since the original HomePod, which was discontinued in 2021. With HomePod mini, the feature works even better and more precisely thanks to the U1 chip. All you have to do is bring your iPhone close to your HomePod to cast a song, podcast, or call. To help users get used to this feature, Apple has included a new guide in iOS 16.3 that shows HomePod owners how to do just that.

Those who have a HomePod set up in their account will see this new guide after update on iOS 16.3. iOS explains that users can bring their iPhone near their HomePod to see playback controls or move audio between devices. The statement reads:

  • Bring iPhone close to HomePod to see the controls or to move music between iPhone and HomePod when playing music.
  • You can bring your iPhone closer to HomePod later to view the controls or stream music.
