Users of a Samsung Galaxy S10 had to contend with a dangerous security problem. The device could be unlocked with any fingerprint, provided it had a third-party protective film. A new software update is now supposed to close the security gap. According to Samsung, the problem has now been resolved - the Galaxy S10 and Note 10 were affected. Since the fingerprint sensor is based on ultrasound, the scanning process was disrupted by small air bubbles under the protective film - Samsung announced this last week. But security researchers are surprised. Should the device not remain locked? The fact that the Galaxy S10 was unlocked straight away caused a lot of ridicule. Samsung did not want to explain why the biometric security technology failed in such a way.
Banks reacted immediately
There is currently speculation about how the error could have remained undiscovered for so long, as the device was introduced several months ago. Rumour has it that Samsung found out about it about a week before the press. The South Korean company has apologized again. It says:
“Samsung Electronics takes product security very seriously and will ensure that security is enhanced through continuous improvements and updates to enhance biometric authentication capabilities.”
