Facebook Messenger for desktop was announced a few months ago. Now the time has come – Facebook Messenger is officially available in the Mac App Store and Microsoft Store starting today.

Facebook has finally released the long-awaited Messenger application for desktop. This is what it says in the press release:

Today we're launching a messenger application for macOS and Windows so you can video chat and stay connected with friends and family around the world on your computer.

The new Facebook Messenger app supports a whole range of features, including group video calls, multitasking, notifications and more. Of course, the application is also available in dark mode. Facebook explains:

Now more than ever, people are using technology to stay in touch with the people they care about, even when they're physically apart. In the last month, we've seen an increase of more than 100% in the number of people using their desktop browser to make audio and video calls on Messenger. Now, with apps for macOS and Windows, the best of Messenger comes to the desktop, including unlimited and free group video calling.

Highlights include the following features:

  • Group video calls on a larger screen – Stay connected with family and friends, get in a workout, or host a virtual happy hour.
  • Easy to connect – You don’t need to know anyone’s email or phone number because all your Facebook friends have Messenger.
  • multitasking – Your chats are easily accessible, and you can jump in and out of the app while doing other things on your computer.
  • notifications – You can receive notifications for new messages so you can quickly find the chat you want. But you're in control – you can mute and snooze the notifications.
  • synchronization – Chats are synced across mobile and desktop, so you never miss a call or message, no matter what device you're using.

The app is now available for macOS and Windows in the respective store. Download from Mac App Store and/or Microsoft Store!

Apple devices here are not test units on loan for two weeks but everyday tools: from the iPhone through MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and iMac to the Apple Vision Pro, at least one device from nearly every product category is in daily use, many of them replaced annually. Every menu path in a guide is verified on the device before it is published.
