About a week ago, the concept of the German Corona warning app was launched GitHub released. The open source project is said to have reached its halfway point and will be released soon.

The German Corona warning app is run as an open source project and is therefore accessible to everyone. The application will rely on decentralized data storage and use Apple's or Google's interface. It is designed to respect both privacy and data protection while still containing the spread of COVID-19. So far, a launch was expected in mid-June. According to current information, this is almost the case. A spokesman for the Walldorf-based software provider SAP told the news agency Reuters: "We are well on schedule"The Corona warning app is scheduled to launch at the start of the first summer holidays in Germany. In Berlin, Brandenburg and Hamburg, this would be June 25, 2020. This means that the app will probably be released in the second half of June.

“Citizens can help break chains of infection more quickly”

While Telekom is responsible for the development of the processes relating to network and mobile communications technology as well as general operations, SAP provides the necessary software technology. In this context, T-Systems CEO Adel Al-Saleh made the following statement:

With the new app, citizens can help break chains of infection more quickly and effectively.

He also stated that the discussions on GitHub were satisfactory and were of course taken seriously. Both companies work very transparently and regularly publish the latest information on the app architecture. On the whole, the German open source approach to the Corona warning app is very commendable. The transparency should also ensure greater trust among the population - a feature that not every country pursues and prefers to rely on central data storage. Every menu path in a guide is verified on the device before it is published.
