At WWDC 2019, Apple officially announced that it wanted to open the iPhone's NFC chip in a controlled manner under iOS 13. This step leads to new possible uses - one very special one: From autumn, the iPhone will become an identity card - also in Germany.
Apple will open up the NFC interface a little more in iOS 13. Selected services will then be able to use the iPhone's reading function - the German ID card will also be included. The Federal Ministry of the Interior officially announced the support in mid-June via a press release. Now there is new information about the launch date. In a statement published yesterday, the Ministry of the Interior announced the following:
"The AusweisApp2 project team had already achieved initial successes in online identification last week. After the 3rd developer beta version of iOS 13 was released at the beginning of this week, the developers were able to successfully complete the entire reading process. From today's perspective, nothing stands in the way of the AusweisApp2 being released for iPhones with the release of iOS 13 in autumn 2019. According to the manufacturer, an iPhone 7 or newer is required to use the NFC interface for online identification."
iPhone replaces wallet
The release of the AusweisApp2 is therefore expected to coincide with the official release of iOS 13 - this should be the case in mid-September. In addition to the ID card, other features will follow. In the future, iPhone users will be able to digitize their passport and use it at the airport, for example.
