The Apple Watch Series 7 is now officially available in stores. One of the new features is fast charging. But there are a few important points to note here.
The Apple Watch Series 7 has a new charging architecture that allows it to charge up to 33 % faster than the Series 6, namely from 0 to 80 % in 45 minutes - which is fantastic. The fast charging function requires a new USB-C charging cable, which Apple includes with the watch and also sells separately. But so far Apple has not given any information on what wattage the power adapter must have for fast charging. After all, no power adapter is included. In a new support document, which has now been published, Apple reveals that all USB-C power adapters with an output of 18 watts or more support fast charging of the new watch. In addition, third-party USB-C adapters with an output of 5 watts or more can be used as long as they support the USB Power Delivery protocol (USB-PD).
Fast charging requires an Apple USB-C Magnetic Fast Charging Cable. This cable has aluminum around the magnetic charger and a USB-C connector.
In addition, one of the following power supplies is required:
- Apple 18W, 20W, 29W, 30W, 61W, 87W, or 96W USB-C power adapter
- A comparable third-party USB-C power adapter that supports USB Power Delivery (USB-PD) at 5 W or more
Apple Watch Series 7: MagSafe Duo charger with restrictions
But what about the MagSafe Duo charger? When Apple introduced the iPhone 12 series, the magnetic charging station for iPhone and Apple Watch was also presented. It can charge both devices at the same time, which definitely has advantages, especially when traveling. After all, you only have to take the charging pad, a cable and power adapter with you. The problem is, as Apple confirmed The Apple Watch Series 7 can "only" be charged at normal speed using the MagSafe Duo charger. This means that the fast charging function is not supported.
