Apple Wallet app could be deleted under iOS 16.1

The integrated Apple Wallet app in the iPhone is apparently deletable starting with iOS 16.1, as a report now reveals.

The US blog 9to5mac took a closer look at iPadOS 16.1 and made an interesting discovery in the code. For example, the iPadOS 16.1 code suggests that the Wallet app can be downloaded from the App Store if it has been removed from an iPhone and the person with the iPhone tries to use a feature like Apple Pay. At the moment, the Wallet app can be removed and hidden from the iPhone's home screen. But it cannot be completely deleted from the device. That will apparently change with the launch of iOS 16.1. Since iOS 16.1 is not yet available, there is no way to test whether the Wallet app can be deleted. So it is possible that Apple will change a few things before the update is released later this year.

iOS 16.1 is expected in autumn

The Wallet app is one of the most important iPhone apps as it hosts debit and credit cards for Apple Pay, handles Apple Pay Cash, hosts the Apple Card, and allows users to store loyalty cards, airline tickets, and more. It remains unclear why Apple is allowing users to delete the Wallet app. The company is facing a class-action lawsuit accusing it of violating antitrust laws by making Apple Pay the only available mobile wallet for tap-to-pay payments on the iPhone. The change may have something to do with that. The iOS 16 update will be released sometime in September, while iOS 16.1 will be released along with iPadOS 16.1 at a later date.
