One of the new iOS 14 features that iOS 13 users will also receive is CarKey. But unfortunately, the feature will not be compatible with all devices.
The CarKey function should make it possible to store digital car keys in the Wallet app. Users can use them to lock and unlock a car and start the engine. Authentication via Face ID or Touch ID is necessary to initiate the process - but there is also an express mode. Basically, the functionality is the same as Apple Pay. If desired, such keys can be shared temporarily or permanently with friends or family members via iMessage.
The Apple Watch Series 4 is out
Unfortunately, this feature is not compatible with all devices. CarKey uses NFC technology to communicate with the car, allowing the devices to function like a real car key. Users must place the iPhone on the NFC reader in the car during pairing. Only then is the digital key stored in the Wallet app. Since CarKey works automatically without the user having to unlock the phone and open an app, it requires "Background Tag Reading" technology, which is only available on the iPhone XR and later. Apple lists the following devices that are compatible with CarKey compatible are:
- iPhone XR
- iPhone XS
- iPhone XS Max
- iPhone 11
- iPhone 11 Pro
- iPhone 11 Pro Max
- iPhone SE (2nd generation)
- Apple Watch Series 5
Although the Apple Watch Series 5 uses the same hardware as the Series 4, the fourth generation of the popular smartwatch was not included. However, the company did not give a reason. The first vehicle to support the feature is expected to be the 2021 BMW 5 Series - other manufacturers will follow next year, according to Apple. (Image: Apple)
