Apple released the new firmware 5B58 for the AirPods 2, AirPods 3, the first generation of AirPods Pro and AirPods Max on Thursday evening, replacing firmware 4E71, which was released in May.

While Apple released firmware 5B58 for the AirPods Pro 2 earlier this week published the update will now be rolled out gradually for the remaining models. Apple does not offer a specific update description on the contents of the updated firmware updates for the AirPods. But the company maintains a support document with version information. Update 5B58 for the AirPods Pro 2 contains "bug fixes and other improvements". No further details were given.

Apple updates firmware of all AirPods models

There is no standard way to update the AirPods software, but the firmware is usually installed over-the-air while the AirPods are connected to an iOS device. If you put the AirPods in the case, plug them into a power source, and then pair them with an iPhone or iPad, the update should take a short time. You can check your AirPods firmware by following these steps:

  • Connect your AirPods or AirPods Pro to your iOS device.
  • Open the Settings app.
  • Tap General.
  • Navigate to Info.
  • Tap AirPods.
  • Look at the number next to “Firmware Version”.

If there are any significant changes in the firmware update, we will of course report on them. However, it can be assumed that Apple has made performance improvements and bug fixes. Apple devices here are not test units on loan for two weeks but everyday tools: from the iPhone through MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and iMac to the Apple Vision Pro, at least one device from nearly every product category is in daily use, many of them replaced annually. Every menu path in a guide is verified on the device before it is published.
