Apple has received a patent that could indicate a new design direction for the controversial Apple AirPods Max Smart Case.

When Apple launched its high-end AirPods Max headphones for around €600, the included Smart Case caused a lot of talk online, as it looks odd and offers little protection compared to the traditional protective cases that come with other premium headphones. Apple's much-maligned case sparked an avalanche of memes disrespectfully comparing it to everything from handbags to lingerie to body parts. The mixed response has led many to wonder if Apple will rethink its design on future models.

AirPods Max Smart Case: This is what the new version could look like

A newly approved patent (via Patently Apple) could hint at where Apple might go next. Filed by Apple in June 2017 and just recently approved by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the patent summarizes various implementations of "cases with flexible magnetic closures and clasps." In its headphone case example, the patent describes a two-piece, full-coverage case that opens and closes via a pair of magnetic "mate pieces" that run along the seam and a magnetic closure on the top. Inside, a divider separates a pair of earphone cups while a headband curves over the divider.

Apple Patent: In the end, it could just remain an idea

The images show the earphone case from above, from the side, and from an angle, and all look like a much more traditional design than the current one-piece, folded-over design, which has left some critics feeling like Apple is neglecting function in its pursuit of iconic fashion. As with many patents, this one could remain just an idea. But it's quite possible that Apple is planning a new version of the AirPods Max to incorporate features that the company reportedly had to leave out in the first round due to development and production issues. Early rumors suggested that the headphones would have interchangeable headbands, touchpads for controls, and no specific left and right orientation. But as we know, these features didn't make it into the final product. However, if you need a decent case now, I recommend this product on Amazon.
