Apple today announced a new open source project called “Password Manager Resources” on its developer website, which is now available on GitHub.
Apple today announced the launch of a new open source project aimed at developers of password managers. The goal of “Password Manager Resources” is to “create strong passwords that are compatible with popular websites” – according to the company. What the iCloud keychain can already do, third-party applications should now also learn. This is what Apple says on its developer website:
The open source Password Manager Resources project allows you to incorporate website-specific requests used by the iCloud Keychain password manager to generate strong, unique passwords. The project also includes collections of websites known to share a login system, links to the pages of websites where users change their passwords, and more.
Password Manager Resources offers great advantages
The entire project has already been made available on GitHub and is therefore available to everyone. The goal of the team behind it is for password manager developers to work together to advance the project and improve password management for users. In order to convince developers of the project, Apple has named three main advantages:
- By sharing resources, all password managers can improve their quality with less work than would be required for each individual password manager to achieve the same effect.
- By publicly documenting site-specific behavior, password managers can provide an incentive for sites to use standards or emerging standards to improve their compatibility with password managers; it's no fun being called out on a list!
- By improving the quality of password managers, we increase users' trust in them as a concept that benefits everyone.
