Apple recently announced further changes for developers in the European Union that completely transform the app ecosystem. These changes aim to give developers more flexibility and control and promote competition in the digital market.

Apple’s decision to allow direct download of iPhone apps from websites in the EU marks a milestone in the history of app distribution. This innovation will bring numerous benefits but also risks not only to developers but also to users of iOS devices.

Apple: Diversity in the app market and new advertising strategies

Last week, Apple announced the introduction of iOS 17.4, the company has opened the doors to alternative app stores in the EU. Now, the company allows third-party app stores to only offer apps from their own catalog. This measure promotes diversity in the app market and allows developers to offer their products on different platforms. Another significant change concerns in-app advertising. Developers can now choose how they want to design their in-app promotions, discounts and offers. This flexibility opens up new possibilities for marketing strategies and allows developers to market their apps more effectively.

Direct app distribution from websites and data protection guarantees

In addition, developers will soon be able to distribute apps directly from their websites, provided they meet certain criteria set by Apple. This allows developers to act more independently and sell their products directly to users. The new data collection and transparency guidelines ensure that users' privacy is protected. The latest changes are part of Apple's efforts to comply with the Digital Markets Act (DMA) and promote competition in the digital market. They apply exclusively within the European Union and are intended to drive innovation in the app ecosystem. Whether this will succeed remains to be seen - after all, the whole thing also entails completely new risks. (Photo by DenPhoto / Bigstockphoto)
