Apple today released a new version of firmware 1.0.276 for AirTags. This is a revision of the update that was made available recently.
The new AirTags 1.0.276 firmware has the build number 1A287b while the old firmware had the build number 1A276d. The 1.0.276 firmware, which rolled out in June, added security improvements against stalking. This new version likely improves the new features. Since the firmware version has not changed, it is not possible to distinguish the new firmware from the old firmware in the Find My app.

Also, there is no way to force an AirTag update as it is something that happens over-the-air through a connected iPhone. To make sure the update goes through, you can put your AirTag within range of your iPhone. However, you will have to be patient as the update is still being rolled out.
