Apple released a new firmware update for the AirPods Pro on December 16, 2019 - but this update was withdrawn shortly afterwards without comment. The reason for this is now said to be known.

The number of reports that the active noise cancellation of the AirPods Pro has deteriorated has increased, including in Apple's own community forum. The latest update is to blame - this is what the website RTINGS.com reports. According to the report, the firmware update 2C54 for the AirPods Pro - released on December 16, 2019 - resulted in a "fairly significant decline in isolation performance". The report states:

After updating to firmware 2C54, we retested the headphones and our results showed a pretty significant drop in isolation performance, especially in the bass range. This means that with ANC turned on, these headphones are not nearly as good at blocking out low-range engine rumble from airplanes or buses as they were before this update. This report reflects those changes.

Not everyone is affected by the problem

However, the update is said to have improved the bass accuracy of the AirPods Pro at the same time - according to the report. However, not every user seems to be affected, as Apple withdrew the update shortly afterwards. Accordingly, not all AirPods Pro models were updated. It remains unclear when the error will actually be fixed. It can be assumed that Apple will provide an update soon.

How to check the firmware version of your AirPods

If you want to know the current firmware version of your AirPods Pro / AirPods, all you have to do is connect the plugs to your iPhone and open the "Info" section under "General" in the iOS settings. Further down you will find a line with the title "AirPods / AirPods Pro from .." - here you can find further data such as model and serial number, firmware version and more.
