A 3D camera could make the iPhone & Co. a lot more attractive. Many smartphone manufacturers are said to be very interested in Sony's technology - including Apple.
The news portal Bloomberg has published a report on the current movements in the 3D camera sector. According to the report, Apple is also said to be very interested in Sony's 3D camera sensors. This camera module could, among other things, replace the TrueDepth technology behind Face ID.
time-of-flight technology
Sony's 3D camera uses the time-of-flight (TOF) method and allows for better images. The sensor calculates the time it takes for light to reach a surface - it can therefore determine depth information and thus create more precise images.
The rear camera would also benefit from the TOF module – augmented reality could be significantly improved. In an earlier report, star analyst Ming-Chi Kuo hinted at such 3D camera technology for the iPad Pro 2019. According to him, this technology would not be introduced into the iPhone until 2020 at the earliest. It remains to be seen when Apple will actually use such camera technology - in addition to many advantages in various application areas, it could even significantly improve sales of iPhone and iPad devices.
