Rumors about a foldable iPhone have been around for a long time. There are also corresponding patents. Now display analyst Ross Young has commented on the topic and claims that the first foldable iPhone will probably appear in 2024.

While rumors of a foldable iPhone have died down in recent months, that doesn't mean the device isn't already in development. Plus, new patents keep cropping up, so it can't be forgotten. Whatever. In September 2020, it was suggested that Samsung had provided Apple with samples of foldable displays for testing purposes. There were also rumors that Apple was working with LG Display. In May of this year, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that Apple is working to launch a foldable iPhone with a flexible 8-inch OLED display in 2023. But since then, he has said little about Apple's work on foldable devices. Bloomberg, on the other hand, reported in January that Apple began working on a foldable iPhone some time ago.

Foldable iPhone: Problems with mass production

But development hadn't progressed beyond a display at the time. There are now said to be several prototypes. Kuo believes that foldable smartphones will be a "must have" for all major smartphone brands in the future. At least, that's Samsung's goal. Earlier this year, Samsung introduced the Galaxy Z Fold 3, the third generation of its foldable smartphone. Samsung's first Galaxy Fold devices were plagued with problems. But the company has now had three years to iron out the bugs. If Apple decides to launch a foldable smartphone in 2023 or 2024, it will have to compete with Samsung, a company that already has several years of experience with foldable devices. Kuo has previously said that Apple will need to solve "key technological and mass production issues" to launch a foldable iPhone by 2023, so it would not be a surprise if the technology improves by 2024 delayed. Apple devices here are not test units on loan for two weeks but everyday tools: from the iPhone through MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and iMac to the Apple Vision Pro, at least one device from nearly every product category is in daily use, many of them replaced annually. Every menu path in a guide is verified on the device before it is published.
