The rumor mill is bubbling again: The iPhone 15 Pro could soon feature a multi-function action button instead of a mute switch. A member of the MacRumors forum had already leaked precise details about the Dynamic Island on the iPhone 14 Pro models last year. Now the same source claims that the action button will replace the previous ring/silent switch. But how will it work and what possible functions are behind it?

It remains to be seen how Apple will implement the action button. However, there is already speculation that it will work similarly to the action button on the Apple Watch Ultra. This is controlled by numerous apps and functions and can be adapted to the individual needs of the user.

iPhone 15 Pro: These functions could be enabled by an action button

The iPhone 15 Pro's action button should be able to be assigned to various system functions for convenient access. Possible functions include:

  • ring/mute,
  • Do not disturb,
  • Flashlight,
  • energy saving mode,
  • light/dark mode,
  • Lock rotation,
  • Show home or lock screen,
  • Open Control Center,
  • Open Notification Center,
  • Open camera,
  • Take a screenshot or run a shortcut.

Accessibility, the app switcher and the app library could also be controlled via the action button. Most of these functions can already be controlled with Back Tap, an accessibility feature introduced with iOS 14. With Back Tap, you can trigger a specific action by tapping the back of the iPhone, such as turning on the flashlight or taking a screenshot. This feature can be set up under "Accessibility" → "Tap" → "Tap Back" in the "Settings" app. In addition to the action button, the iPhone 15 Pro models are said to have a single volume button that can be used to control the volume up and down. Both buttons are said to have a solid-state design and provide haptic feedback through additional Taptic Engines. The source claims (via MacRumors) that the action button will continue to work even when the iPhone's battery is empty, thanks to a new power-saving chip.

iPhone 15 Pro Rumors – Conclusion

The speculation about the iPhone 15 Pro and the new action button remain rumors for now. Nevertheless, it is interesting to see what possible functions could come with the action button. It remains to be seen whether and how Apple will implement the action button and what additional features can be expected in the upcoming iPhone 15 series. (Photo by SashaMagic / Bigstockphoto)
