Apple plans to further develop its display technology as early as 2024. According to a new report by analyst Ross Young, it's becoming "increasingly likely" that Apple will launch a MacBook with an OLED display sometime in 2024. The company is also continuing to work on iPad Pro models with OLED panels.
The Analyst saysthat this OLED MacBook is expected to be a MacBook Air. But that could change as we approach 2024:
It is becoming increasingly likely that Apple will launch a 13.3" OLED notebook in 2024, in addition to the 11" OLED and 12.9" iPad Pro models. It is expected to be a MacBook Air, but it could also be a MacBook, MacBook Pro, or a new category.
Young adds that the OLED iPad Pro and MacBook Air will use a display technology called "tandem stack," which increases brightness, improves display longevity, and reduces power consumption by about 30 percent.

The OLED displays used by Apple will also likely have a variable refresh rate to further improve efficiency. As we have explained in the past, the mini-LED technology currently used by Apple is an alternative to OLED. It is better in some ways and worse in others. Mini-LED screens consist of thousands of small LEDs arranged in multiple dimming zones. Mini-LED displays can achieve higher brightness than OLED displays, but local dimming is still not as precise as OLED. OLED displays also suffer from the burn-in problem. Looking to the future, Apple is also investing heavily in micro-LED technology. This would combine the best of both worlds of mini-LED and OLED displays.
