The iPad has evolved from a simple tablet into a versatile work tool. A report reveals that John Ternus played a key role in this transformation. The Apple executive is also considered a potential future CEO of the company.

For a long time, the iPad failed to live up to its potential. The hardware became increasingly powerful, but the software couldn't keep pace. This is precisely where John Ternus stepped in and spearheaded a crucial change.

iPad initially looks like a large iPhone

In its early years, the iPad ran on iOS, the same software as the iPhone. Since the device was originally designed as a larger smartphone, the software didn't make optimal use of either the larger screen or the more powerful hardware (via Bloomberg).

Ternus requires its own operating system

John Ternus recognized this problem early on. He argued internally that the software was limiting the iPad's capabilities. He eventually convinced Craig Federighi to develop his own system.

iPadOS as a turning point

With iPadOS, the iPad gained features better suited to its hardware. These include, above all, desktop-like multitasking and an overall more productive user experience. Only with newer versions like iPadOS 26 was the performance level almost fully matched by the hardware.

Accessories as an important component

Ternus was involved not only in the software, but also in accessories such as the Apple Pencil and the Magic Keyboard. The magnetic charging and pairing systems also resulted from his involvement.

Collaboration at Apple

It is remarkable that a hardware chief had such a strong influence on the software. This demonstrates the close collaboration within the company.

iPadOS as a crucial development step

The iPad has fundamentally changed thanks to iPadOS. John Ternus's initiative ensured that software and hardware work together more effectively. Today, the iPad is a significantly more versatile device than it was in its early years. (Image: Shutterstock / Wongsakorn 2468)
