Apple is apparently working on a massive camera upgrade for the iPhone. While current models are equipped with a 48-megapixel sensor, a new leak suggests a jump to 200 megapixels is imminent. It's still unclear which model will first feature this camera, but the upgrade would represent a major step in the development of iPhone photography technology.
The camera has been one of the most important purchasing criteria for an iPhone for years. With each new model series, Apple improves its photo capabilities – whether through larger sensors, new lenses, or software optimizations. Especially with the move to 48 MP in the current Pro models, Apple has made it clear that it wants to regain a greater presence in the high-end segment. Now, the next technological leap appears to be in preparation.
iPhone camera to increase from 48 to 200 megapixels
According to the well-known leaker "Digital Chat Station" on the Chinese platform Weibo, Apple is working on a 200-megapixel camera sensor. Although a specific model was not mentioned, development is apparently already underway. Whether this upgrade will arrive next year or later is currently unclear. A somewhat smaller camera update is initially planned for the expected iPhone 17 series in 2025: an improved 24-megapixel front-facing camera and a new 48-megapixel telephoto lens for the Pro models. The major 200-megapixel upgrade, however, appears to be planned for a later model. It could be used in the iPhone Fold, which is rumored to be released in 2026 and positioned as an ultra-premium device. An anniversary model for the iPhone's 20th anniversary in 2027 would also be a possible candidate for the introduction of the new camera.
Apple remains cautious about megapixels – so far
Compared to its competitors, Apple has so far been rather conservative when it comes to megapixel count. While Android manufacturers like Samsung opted for 200 MP with the Galaxy S23 Ultra two years ago, Apple only made the leap from 12 to 48 MP with the iPhone 14 Pro series. The reason for this reluctance often lies in image quality. More megapixels don't automatically mean better photos. Especially in low-light conditions, a larger sensor can lead to image noise if it's not perfectly tuned. Therefore, Apple traditionally relies more on the combination of hardware, image processing, and software. So if a 200 MP sensor does indeed come out, it can be assumed that Apple will place particular emphasis on optimization.
