There are now enough rumors about the iPhone 2021 series. However, a few well-known Barclays analysts have now commented on the new iPhone models. In addition to the high-end devices, the iPhone SE was also mentioned.
Barclays analysts Blayne Curtis, Thomas O'Malley, Tim Long and their colleagues have made a new forecast based on discussions with Apple suppliers. The team has already published interesting reports in the past, which ultimately came true. For example, they were the first to claim that Apple would save on the power adapter in the iPhone 12. This makes their forecasts all the more interesting.
Wifi 6E: Higher performance, lower latency and more
According to Barclays, the next generation of iPhones (called 12S or 13) could support Wifi 6E. If this happens, radio frequency chipmaker Skyworks would benefit. Wifi 6E offers the features and capabilities of Wifi 6, including higher performance, lower latency and faster data rates, extended to the 6 GHz band. The additional spectrum offers many more capabilities than the existing 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz WiFi, resulting in higher bandwidth and less interference for devices that support Wifi 6E. Vijay Nagarajan, an executive at chipmaker Broadcom, said:
The 6GHz band will be perhaps the biggest boon to WiFi users in 20 years. This part of the spectrum, coupled with WiFi, will enable new consumer experiences on smartphones, AR/VR devices, and wearables that we haven't even invented yet.
Wifi 6: A real game changer
Meanwhile, Cisco manager Jayanthi Srinivasan commented on the issue as follows:
Wifi 6's move into the 6 GHz spectrum is a game changer for two reasons - the availability of the additional channels and the ability to finally use 160 MHz for high-bandwidth applications such as AR and VR.
Earlier this year, the FCC passed rules making 1,200 MHz of spectrum in the 6 GHz band available for unlicensed use in the United States, paving the way for the launch of devices that support Wifi 6E. Both the iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 support the standard, non-6 GHz version of Wifi 6, as does the second-generation iPhone SE.
Third generation iPhone SE unlikely
The analysts also pointed out that audio chip maker Cirrus Logic will supply a new power conversion chip for some iPhone 2021 models. It remains unclear whether this move would have any obvious benefit for consumers. As for the next iPhone SE, the analysts believe that Apple has no plans to Device in the foreseeable future. According to Barclays, a larger SE device (5.5″ or 6.1″) is actually being discussed. But a launch in spring 2021 seems rather unlikely at the moment.
