iPhone 2019: 3D Touch to be discontinued in autumn – an alternative already exists

3D Touch is a function that Apple introduced with the iPhone 6s. The user can perform three different functions by pressing the touch-sensitive display with varying degrees of force. The pressure sensitivity can be individually adjusted on compatible devices.

For months, reports have been surfacing that Apple will be burying the 3D Touch feature this year. Although 3D Touch is an asset and popular with some users, the function has not been a great success. The sensors required for it also make the manufacture of the displays much more difficult, which is why production is more expensive. Some analysts believe that this is precisely the reason why the function will soon be discontinued - others suspect its low popularity worldwide. Due to this fact, the abolition is becoming increasingly likely - but this is by no means a regrettable fact, as Apple has a replacement to offer.

Haptic Touch & Force Touch or newer

Therefore, no one should be bothered by the change. The replacement for 3D Touch on the iPhone XR is called Haptic Touch. In the new version, the user receives haptic (vibrating) feedback by a long click. The function was originally known under the name Force Touch from the Apple Watch. Cupertino had to optimize this feature in the iPhone X due to the missing home button. Incidentally, the haptic feedback is also used in Macs and is also known there under the name Force Touch. It remains to be seen whether more sources will speak out in the coming months and support the rumor. Perhaps the future beta of iOS 13 more about Apple's plans in this direction - it cannot be ruled out that Apple will integrate a further developed form of the previously known 3D Touch function into the iPhone 11. A corresponding patent was already registered in autumn last year.
