MagSafe has been an integral part of the Apple world since the iPhone 12. However, the speed of wireless charging has so far been clearly limited. The current Qi 2 technology allows a maximum of 15 watts. The iPhone 16 can achieve up to 25 watts with a trick, but requires a 30-watt power adapter. With Qi 2.2, Apple is now apparently going much further. New MagSafe chargers have appeared in Taiwan that deliver up to 45 watts. Chances are good that the iPhone 17 will be the first device to fully benefit from this.
Qi 2.2: What’s behind the new standard?
Qi 2.2 is the next version of the wireless charging standard developed by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC). The new version is based on Qi 2.1 but includes several key improvements:
- significantly higher charging power,
- better magnetic alignment,
- more efficient energy transmission,
- Backward compatibility with older Qi devices.
New MagSafe chargers from Apple have appeared
Two new MagSafe chargers are listed on the Taiwanese certification website NCC: A3502 and A3503. Both support Qi 2.2. The charging power is 45 watts (15 volts x 3 amps). The devices come with braided USB-C cables – one is 1 meter long, the other 2 meters long. Apple remains true to its familiar puck design: flat, white, and round (via 91mobiles ).
Which devices benefit from Qi 2.2?
According to the certification documents, the new MagSafe pucks work with iPhones from the iPhone 11 to the iPhone 16. However, the charging speed is limited on these older models. Only devices with correspondingly modern charging electronics—such as the iPhone 17—can utilize the full 45 to 50 watts. A new charging chip is likely used here, comparable to the PMIC (Power Management Integrated Circuit) from the Android world, for example, in Samsung.
Why Qi 2.2 is important for the iPhone 17
Until now, Apple has limited charging to a maximum of 15 to 25 watts. Even the fastest MagSafe solutions charge slower than some competing Android models. With Qi 2.2, the iPhone 17 could finally close this gap. Faster charging times mean less waiting time, more flexibility in your everyday life, and an overall better user experience.
When will the iPhone 17 be released?
Apple hasn't officially unveiled the new chargers yet, but their appearance on the NCC website suggests an imminent release. Apple traditionally unveils new iPhones in September, so it's quite possible that the iPhone 17 will launch with Qi 2.2 and new MagSafe chargers.
