Apple is apparently facing an unexpected design change with the upcoming iPhone 17 Pro. While the last Pro models relied on stainless steel and titanium, new leaks indicate that Apple plans to return to aluminum as the frame material for the iPhone 17 Pro. This would break with a long-standing strategy – and is already causing controversy in the tech world.
Since the iPhone X in 2017, all high-end iPhones have used either stainless steel or titanium. Apple wanted to clearly differentiate itself from its cheaper models with these materials. The titanium frame of the current iPhone 16 Pro models is considered particularly light and robust. Now, Apple appears to be reversing this move—at least partially. What's behind this possible reversal?
iPhone 17 Pro: Aluminum frame instead of titanium
The Chinese Weibo account "Instant Digital" has reported that the iPhone 17 Pro will come with an aluminum frame. In addition, the back will still contain a glass area to enable MagSafe and Qi wireless charging. This material combination - aluminum frame with a glass back - is reminiscent of previous iPhone generations and was already mentioned in an earlier report by Wayne Ma ("The Information"). The new source now confirms this information. Apple currently uses aluminum primarily in its cheaper iPhone models such as the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus. The more expensive iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, on the other hand, use titanium. The fact that the Pro series is now switching back to aluminum is therefore a remarkable decision.
Possible reasons for the material change in the iPhone 17 Pro
Nothing has been officially confirmed yet, but there are some plausible reasons for this change:
- Aluminum is significantly lighter than titanium, which could make the new iPhone 17 Pro even more manageable.
- According to Instant Digital, the aluminum frame is designed to be particularly thin. This would allow for very narrow display edges, which fits the trend toward borderless designs.
- Aluminum may be technically better suited for the new housing design with a larger camera bulge.
- Production costs could also play a role, although this is rarely the only factor for Apple.
What about the iPhone 17 Air?
According to an earlier leak, the new iPhone 17 Air model, also scheduled for release this year, will continue to use titanium. This would suggest that Apple wants to differentiate itself more strongly: The Air model would then be the particularly lightweight premium device, while the iPhone 17 Pro would focus more on design and function than on materials.
How reliable is the source?
Instant Digital has more than 1.4 million followers on Weibo and has been correct in the past on a number of occasions – including the yellow finish of the iPhone 14 and the titanium Milanese Loop band for the Apple Watch Ultra 2. At the same time, as with all leaks, there are no guarantees. This account hasn't always been right either.
iPhone 17 Pro: Step backward or clever move?
If you're looking for a lightweight, powerful iPhone, the iPhone 17 Pro with its aluminum frame could be just the thing. Even though titanium sounds more sophisticated, that doesn't mean aluminum is a step backward. Apple has proven over many years that they can build high-quality cases with aluminum. The difference in weight, feel, and design could even be an advantage for many users. Apple will unveil the iPhone 17 series in September as usual.
