Apple will make a significant upgrade in display technology with the iPhone 17 series. According to recent reports, the company will equip all models with Samsung's high-quality "M14" OLED panel. This display was already used in the iPhone 16 Pro models and offers higher brightness and a longer lifespan. What is particularly interesting is that the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air will also receive this panel - a significant improvement compared to previous standard models. In addition, ProMotion technology will be available for the first time in all iPhone variants. This means that the regular iPhone 17 could even offer better display quality in some aspects than Samsung's new Galaxy S25 Ultra.
For the next iPhone generation, Apple is relying on the OLED panels of the “M” series from Samsung (via Instant Digital). These displays are designed for flagship smartphones and are characterized by their high quality. The M14 panel was specifically developed for improved luminosity and energy efficiency. It offers 30% more brightness than the previous M13 panel and a longer lifespan because the blue emitting layer works more efficiently. This not only makes the display brighter but also more energy efficient. Interestingly, Samsung's Galaxy S25 Ultra itself uses an improved version of the older M13 panel. This means that the regular iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air could be superior in some areas in terms of display technology - an unusual move, as Apple has previously reserved the best displays for its Pro models.
ProMotion for all iPhone 17 models
Until now, the adaptive refresh rate of 120 Hz was only available on the Pro models. The iPhone 17 series is set to change that: all new models will be equipped with ProMotion. This technology ensures smoother display of animations and scrolling movements. The difference is particularly noticeable when surfing the Internet, playing games or watching videos. In addition, the refresh rate can be reduced to as little as 1 Hz when there is no movement on the display. This function saves energy and enables an improved always-on display. The time, widgets, notifications and background images on the lock screen remain visible without putting a heavy strain on the battery.
New display sizes: More space for content
Apple has already introduced larger displays with the iPhone 16 Pro models. Now the standard models are also getting an upgrade. The iPhone 17 is expected to come with a 6.27-inch display, while the iPhone 17 Air will have a 6.6-inch display. The latter replaces the previous Plus model. This positions the iPhone 17 Air between the regular iPhone 17 and the iPhone 17 Pro Max, which is expected to continue to have a 6.86-inch display. For users, this means more space for content without the device becoming unwieldy. Apple therefore seems to be deliberately opting for larger displays to offer users a better visual experience.
iPhone 17 series: A strong display upgrade for all models
With the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air, Apple is taking a significant step forward. For the first time, all models will have the same high-quality OLED display that was already used in the iPhone 16 Pro models. In addition, Apple is bringing ProMotion technology to all variants and enlarging the displays of the standard models. This could even allow the regular iPhone 17 to keep up with or surpass the competition in the high-end segment in some areas. It remains to be seen whether Apple is planning further display innovations or whether the new technology will also result in improvements in battery life.
