Six months before the next generation iPhone is unveiled, the iPhone 14 is in the technical validation phase. However, a new report shows that the 2023 iPhone lineup could feature the long-speculated Periscope design with 5x optical zoom.

In a new letter to investors, Haitong International Securities analyst Jeff Pu explains that according to his supply chain survey, the iPhone 14 is now in the EVT ("Engineering Validation Test") phase, with no impact from the previous Shenzhen lockdown. Below is a brief explanation of each phase.

Device development goes through several phases

For example, when an iPhone is developed, it goes through a total of four phases. The EVT phase ("Engineering Validation Test") focuses on various hardware components. The DVT phase ("Design Validation Test") follows. Once both test phases are completed, development moves on to the PVT phase ("Production Validation Test") and only then does a final picture of the respective device emerge. In the last step, a so-called "production verification" is carried out in the responsible factory in order to then be able to start mass production. In addition, the analyst revealed some information about the upcoming iPhone 14. He says that the A16 chip, which is intended for the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max, will have a larger "die" compared to the A15, despite the switch to 4nm technology.

iPhone 15 Pro models could use periscope camera

In terms of product offerings, we expect the iPhone 14 to have a strong line-up, supported by a larger display (entry-level model) and an improved camera (48MP for the Pro). On the other hand, pricing is key and we expect the iPhone 14's starting price to be roughly the same as the iPhone 13.

According to Jeff Pu, there is a high probability that Apple will launch a periscope camera with 5x optical zoom for the iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max, which are expected in 2023. Last but not least, Pu makes an interesting hint about Apple's future OLED iPad. He says that he expects Apple to introduce an OLED panel for 11- and 12.9-inch iPads in 2024. An earlier report from The Elec agrees with Pu's analysis, although it is unlikely that Apple will switch from miniLED to OLED for the iPad Pro. Most likely, the OLED iPad will be for the Air line.
