According to a new report, the upcoming iPhones will offer a number of new camera features tailored to professional users, including ProRes for video, Portrait mode for video, and design updates through a smaller notch.
Loud Bloomberg Apple plans to include Portrait mode for video in this year's iPhone lineup, which will allow users to shoot videos with an additional bokeh effect behind the subject. Apple introduced Portrait mode with the iPhone 7 Plus. But since then, it's only been available for photos.
Apple first added Portrait Mode to the iPhone 7 Plus in 2016, and it quickly became a fan favorite. The feature can bring a person into focus while blurring the background, known as the bokeh effect. For the new iPhones, Apple plans to bring the same technique to video, with a feature internally called Cinematic Video. As with photos, the iPhone's depth sensor will create the effect and allow users to change the amount of blur after the shot is taken.
iPhone 13: Some camera features could be Pro-exclusive
In addition to portrait mode for videos, Apple also plans to bring ProRes for videos to the iPhone. This allows users to record videos in a higher quality format and offers significantly more editing options. Similar to how ProRaw for images is exclusive to the higher-end iPhone 12 models, ProRes could also be exclusive to the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max, according to Bloomberg. In addition, Apple is also planning an advanced iteration of the standard photo filters for photographers with the upcoming iPhones. Instead of applying a filter to the entire photo, the upcoming iPhones will "use artificial intelligence to make precise changes to objects and people in the photos."
Users can choose from several styles to apply to their photos, including one that renders colors either warmer or cooler while keeping whites neutral. Another option creates a more dramatic look with deeper shadows and more contrast. The company plans to create a more balanced style for rendering shadows and true-to-life colors with a brighter appearance.
In addition, Gurman confirmed again that the upcoming iPhones will feature a faster A15 chip, a smaller notch and a new display technology that will enable a higher refresh rate of 120 Hz.
