For months, there have been reports that Apple plans to announce a brand new 12.9-inch iPad Pro in early 2021. The device will feature a miniLED panel for the first time. Now DigiTimes has highlighted the whole thing in a new article. It is currently claimed that Apple has diversified its supply chain for displays and touch panels, with BOE finally receiving approval to supply OLED panels for the iPhone and GIS moving to supply touch panels for both the iPhone and the upcoming iPad Pro. iPad Pro 2021: MiniLEDs are more reliable
GIS approved investments of NT$2.198 billion (US$76.3 million) and NT$1.421 billion proposed by its subsidiary in Chengdu, China, in August and November 2020, respectively, with the funds to focus on expanding production capacity for integrated touch modules used in tablets - the sources said. The subsidiary will invest another NT$753 million to improve production line automation. The subsidiary currently produces integrated touch modules for iPads and MacBooks, the sources said.
In addition to iPhones, GIS will produce integrated touch modules for miniLED-backlit panels of the 12.9-inch iPad Pro, which is scheduled to launch in the first quarter of 2021, the sources said.
The well-known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has already stated several times that the switch to mini-LED displays would enable thinner and lighter product designs. In addition, the new screen technology has the same advantages as OLEDs, although the values are even better. Apart from that, mini-LEDs are more reliable because they cannot burn in. In addition to a new display technology, the device is said to have significant improvements on the inside. It is currently not known whether an 11-inch model will also be included.
