Since its launch, the iPad Pro has made a name for itself as a powerful tablet with innovative features. But reports suggest that Apple is only planning a minor update for the device in 2025. Speculation about what this update will bring and how it will affect the market is a hot topic. Here's everything that's known so far.

Apple users and tech enthusiasts are always eagerly awaiting news about upcoming products. The iPad Pro has been a pioneer in technology and design for the past few years, but recent information suggests a more subdued update.

Technical changes: The M5 processor in focus

A report from the supply chain suggests that Apple is developing a new iPad Pro for 2025. This is a model that, according to sources, will mainly improve internal specifications. One of the most likely changes is the switch to the M5 processor. This is to replace the already powerful M4 chip, which was introduced in 2024. The design of the iPad Pro, on the other hand, is not expected to change. Both the casing and the screen sizes of 11 inches and 13 inches will remain unchanged. The OLED screen technology that Apple introduced in 2024 will also be continued. It is unclear whether there will be improvements here, but fundamental innovations are not to be expected.

Supply chain: diversification through new partners?

An interesting twist concerns the supply chain. Apple may in the future bring on board an additional partner for the production of the display driver ICs (DDIs). These small processors control the OLED screen. So far, Apple has mainly sourced the DDIs from Samsung. However, the South Korean company LX Semicon hopes to also be allowed to supply parts for the iPad Pro from 2025. If this succeeds, it could reduce Apple's dependence on a single supplier and possibly reduce production costs. However, it is not yet certain whether LX Semicon will actually be approved as a supplier. Approval could come by March 2025, but possible quality problems could thwart the plans. If it does not work out, Samsung will probably remain the sole supplier of DDIs.

Competition from within the company: The iPad Air as a challenge

Apple also faces challenges in its market strategy. In 2024, the company launched an iPad Air with a larger screen that competes with the iPad Pro in some areas. This may be one reason why iPad Pro sales fell short of expectations. The introduction of a new processor alone may not be enough to reverse this trend.

Conservative Update: What the iPad Pro 2025 will look like

The iPad Pro 2025 will apparently receive a rather conservative update. The focus is on the M5 processor and a more stable supply chain, while major design changes or revolutionary innovations are absent. For Apple, this is an optimization strategy, but for you as a user, the question is whether the update justifies the purchase. If you already own a current iPad Pro, it may be worth waiting for a more comprehensive upgrade in the future. However, if you are using an older model or are looking for a powerful tablet, the iPad Pro 2025 remains an interesting option. The final details and possibly additional surprises from Apple could complete the picture. (Image: Apple)
