There have been repeated reports about a foldable iPhone in recent weeks. Now there are new details about Apple's current prototype.

In the meantime, many different rumors have accumulated about a foldable iPhone. Confirmed patents are fueling the whole thing. Now the YouTuber and leaker Jon Prosser has revealed in a new video reported back. As a reminder, Prosser originally stated that the foldable iPhone isn't actually a true folding phone. This model uses two separate display panels connected by a hinge.

Foldable iPhone: “chemically strengthened Ceramic Shield folding glass”

Although the iPhone prototype has two separate displays, Prosser claimed that the panels look "pretty continuous and seamless." But now there are new details on the subject. In fact, Apple is now testing a device that has a real foldable panel. The technology behind it is said to be "chemically strengthened Ceramic Shield folding glass" - according to his source. But the testing phase is said to be in a very early stage, so a final result is still pending. In response to Prosser's information, display analyst Ross Young noted:

Patents confirm Apple's interest

Jon Prosser reported that Apple is working on a foldable version of the chemically strengthened ceramic shield. Samsung's foldable displays already use chemically strengthened glass from SCHOTT. It will be interesting to see how thin the ceramic protective glass can be made.

The thickness will determine the foldable radius. Thicker glass can be processed with the seam laser (see LPKF) but it currently changes the look of the glass. That Apple/Corning is working on foldable glass is no surprise but the use of ceramic shield is a good update.

Apple's interest in a foldable smartphone is now an open secret thanks to various patents. There are reports that the Device could be released in 2022. But until that happens, it remains just a rumor that should be viewed with skepticism. On offer: MagSafe Duo charger 18 percent cheaper (Photo by bbsferrari / Bigstockphoto)
