It's unlikely that Apple will place the Face ID components under the iPhone display next year, according to Ross Young, a display analyst with a good track record of making Apple predictions.
Young had previously assumed that Apple would launch its first iPhone with under-display Face ID in 2024, but now believes the timeline has been pushed back to 2025 at the earliest due to “sensor issues,” he revealed today in a Tweet This means that the so-called "iPhone 17 Pro" could be the first model with Face ID hidden under the display. But he still expects a hole in the display for the device's front camera.

Young's revised timeline contradicts a report from Korean publication The Elec, which said that under-display Face ID will launch next year with the iPhone 16 Pro. Young is typically very specific, so it's more likely that the technology will be at least two years away. Meanwhile, Apple is rumored to expand the Dynamic Island to all four iPhone 15 models after introducing the feature to the iPhone 14 Pro models last year. If and when iPhones with under-display Face ID launch, it's possible that the Dynamic Island will remain an optional software feature.
