Apple's mixed reality headset, set to debut this year, will feature three displays, according to a report released today by display analyst Ross Young.

The display configuration will include two Micro-OLED displays and one AMOLED panel, with Sony supplying the Micro-OLED displays that Apple plans to use. The Micro-OLED displays will be the main displays for the headset, but what the AMOLED display will be used for remains unknown for now. Modern VR headsets do not use AMOLED technology because the pixel density is too low, so it's possible that Apple will use it for low-resolution peripheral vision. Sony recently unveiled a 4K display with 4000 pixels per inch designed for VR headsets.

Apple's first AR/VR headset is aimed at developers

If Apple does indeed use this Sony technology, an assumed 4000 x 4000 pixel arrangement suggests that the display for the headset will have a diagonal of 1.4 inches. But this advanced display configuration will come at a "high price." Young suspectedthat the headset will cost several thousand dollars, which is consistent with previous reports that put the price at around $3,000. The first version of the Apple AR/VR headset will likely be aimed at developers and will serve to expand Apple's AR/VR ecosystem. Current rumors suggest that the headset may be unveiled at this year's Worldwide Developers Conference and will go on sale later this year. (Image: Rendersbyjan)
