While there are plenty of rumors about new iPhone models, there is hardly any reporting about future Apple Watch models - which makes it all the more exciting for fans when something leaks out.

According to a new report from the Economic Daily News, Apple is in talks with various Taiwanese display manufacturers. The reason for this is the switch from OLED to MicroLED screens for the Apple Watch. According to initial information, the new display technology will be introduced next year with the sixth generation of the Apple Watch. According to the source, mass production of such panels would require a lead time of around nine months - which means that the switch to MicroLED is not expected until next year at the earliest. The sixth generation Apple Watch would therefore be the first Apple product with MicroLED technology.

Better than OLED?

MicroLED technology is considered a possible successor to today's OLED screens. This is generally seen as significantly better than OLED - Apple currently uses the latter in the Apple Watch, iPhone X and iPhone XS series. The new display technology has several advantages over OLED panels. MicroLEDs have a much longer lifespan and hardly lose any brightness - and the so-called burn-in problem is eliminated. Furthermore, MicroLED screens do not require backlighting because the pixels themselves emit their own light - just like OLED screens. This means that they offer the same color saturation and contrast - the biggest advantage: they are more energy efficient. The fact that Apple is interested in such a display technology has already been mentioned several times in rumors in the past. A switch to MicroLED technology is therefore very likely. Every menu path in a guide is verified on the device before it is published.
